Discover Comet Burgers

Walking into Comet Burgers feels like stepping into a classic American diner that knows exactly what it is and doesn’t try to be anything else. I’ve stopped by more times than I can count after evening events in downtown Royal Oak, and the experience has been consistently satisfying in a way that’s hard to fake. The smell of sizzling beef on the flat-top, the low hum of conversation, and the quick rhythm of orders being called out all set the tone for a place that’s been feeding locals the same dependable comfort for years at 207 S Main St, Royal Oak, MI 48067, United States.

The menu keeps things refreshingly simple, which is honestly part of the charm. Burgers are the obvious star, cooked on a griddle rather than a flame, giving them that caramelized crust people usually associate with old-school diners. According to food science research published by the USDA, flat-top cooking at high heat encourages the Maillard reaction, which is what gives beef its deep, savory flavor. You can taste that science at work here. Fries arrive hot and crisp, and the shakes are thick enough that you’ll need patience and a sturdy straw. I once watched a cook explain to a new hire how long each patty should stay down before the flip; that kind of hands-on process control shows in the final bite.

One detail regulars appreciate is how quickly food comes out without feeling rushed. During a lunch visit last summer, my order hit the counter in under ten minutes, even with a full dining room. That lines up with what restaurant operations experts often point out: a focused menu reduces prep time and improves consistency. It’s a method many successful diners rely on, and it clearly works here. Reviews from locals often mention speed and reliability, which matters just as much as flavor when you’re grabbing a bite between errands or meetings.

The location adds to the appeal. Being right on Main Street makes it an easy stop before catching a movie or after walking around nearby shops. Friends visiting from out of town usually comment on how authentic the place feels, and I agree. Nothing about the décor screams trendy, yet that’s exactly why it works. In an era where many restaurants chase Instagram aesthetics, there’s something reassuring about a diner that sticks to stainless steel counters and worn-in booths. Hospitality research from Cornell University has shown that perceived authenticity strongly influences repeat visits, and that insight feels especially relevant here.

Food safety and cleanliness are also worth mentioning. On every visit, the prep area has been visibly tidy, and staff regularly wipe down surfaces. The CDC notes that proper kitchen hygiene significantly reduces the risk of foodborne illness, and seeing those practices in action builds trust. Still, like any busy diner, peak hours can get loud and seating can feel tight, which might not suit everyone. That’s less a flaw and more a reality of popular spots in compact downtown areas.

If you read through online reviews, you’ll notice a pattern: people don’t come expecting reinvention; they come expecting a solid burger, friendly service, and fair prices. And that’s exactly what they get. I’ve recommended the place to coworkers looking for a casual lunch and to friends craving a late-night bite, and the feedback is almost always the same-simple, satisfying, and worth returning to. In a city packed with dining options, that kind of reputation isn’t built overnight, and it’s a big reason this diner continues to hold its place in the local food scene.

  • Dear Mr. Comet.... Fantastic remodel of the SCS location, I only wish there would be a small inside table-service or just a bar area. Food quality was quite good, but as I compare it to BK right next door your product is specifically cooked to order not 'mass produced'... .so that does take time! Service rating consists of the previously mentioned ticket-time and that the cashier had to go to her other register to process my cash transaction. In the words of famous movies "I'LL BE BACK"! • Fun place, with good food and great service. The decor focused on comets was entertaining, especially for our young kids. Were went right at noon and it wasn’t over.y busy (lots of take out and delivery business for nearby medical center). Great location. Inexpensive! Our grandkids can’t wait to go back!

  • Fast, Friendly, and Drool worthy! The girly and I both got the the Cuzzy Burger (their signature burger). Along with Garlic Parm Fries and classic onion rings. Everything was absolutely bangin' good. One of the best burgers I've had in a while. Didn't wait more than 10 mins for my food. I was sad that they weren't open after the concert because I would have totally ordered another burger. Staff is genuine and appreciate their customers. 10 outa 10 would recommend.

  • Very good burger. I have had my share of burgers and this one’s up there. Give them a try if you haven’t already. And if you see this post, just know I’m a very hard critic, but these burgers were very tasty. Very delicious very fresh. Update I tried the chicken and I didn’t like it, but my daughter did it was overcooked for me, but I’m never gonna forget this burger for the rest of my life.

  • Cuzzy Burger was delicious! So were the Comet Loaded fries. The Caramelized Balsamic Onion Jam, Imported Gruyere Cheese, Garlic Mayo, And Zip Sauce really made the burger great! This may be the best burger place I have ever been to. Note, this is not a great place for big groups though. There are bar seats and small tables for 4 at the absolute most but ideally for 2. The interior is very nice. This may actually be better than The Burger Joint in Milford, my previous favorite burger place.

  • First time eating at Comet Burgers, decided to stop in on a whim while passing by, and to say the food and service was "Out of this world!" is an understatement! I ordered the Don Lon and it was delicious! The fries were amazing and crispy! We had a group of five and everyone was happy with their meals. We will absolutely be stopping by again!

  • Food was phenomenal! Like that burger and cheese fries was everything I needed and then some! The egg on the burger was the perfect touch. I do wish there was at least two more slices of bacon though. The cheese fries were a large portion so I was even able to share that with the table. The food was also very fulfilling!

  • The second I walked into this place I knew that I was somewhere special. To say that it is like stepping into a time machine would be a disservice to the establishment--because I'm not sure whether restaurants with such a high standard for cleanliness and quality of food ever existed in the past. It's like stepping into a comic book. Everything from the furniture to the walls to the food is hyper stylized, delicious, and squeaky clean. I can't recommend this place enough. I'll be coming back again and again for those strawberry malted milkshakes
